Unagi 鰻

(continued from Japanese snack - takoyaki)

another Japanese delicacy that i love. yum~ unagi (鰻, うなぎ) are freshwater eels, especially the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica). it is quite expensive.

unadon/unagidon (鰻丼, "eel bowl") are grilled eels placed over rice. unajuu (鰻重) is a similar dish served in a black box rather than a donburi (丼) bowl. they are usually larger in portion than unadon. unagi-zushi (鰻鮨, うなぎ寿司) is eel-sushi.

in Japan, unagi is often eaten during the hot summers. n a special day for eating Unagi would be the midsummer "doyo no ushi no hi" (土用の丑の日, day of the Ox). ox as in the 12 signs of the Japanese zodiac. this is because unagi is nutritious and rich in vitamin A, and provides strength and vitality to fight against the extremely hot and humid summer of Japan.

oh my .. im hungry again ..
