Charlie was a policeman, his wife Muriel a hairdresser. Charlie was kind and generous, while Muriel was greedy and materialistic. Yvonne was a waitress, bankrupted because her husband Eddie emptied their joint account without her permission. Charlie met with Yvonne at the diner she worked. he didn't have enough money to pay for her tip, therefore promising to give her a doubled tip or half of his lottery winnings the next day. miraculously, he won the lottery and gave half of it to Yvonne despite the protest from Muriel. they spent a lot of time together, which soon led to his divorce with Muriel.
we watched the movie knowing Nicholas Cage was in it. unfortunately, it revealed how small a star he was back then, with a character that failed to capture our heart nor interest. the plot was absurd and flat. as "bad" as a character Muriel was, Charlie wasn't exactly fit for being the "good" guy either. on the surface, the film was a romance, of a rare encounter between 2 persons of the same mind; but unfortunately in real life, it was just another disloyalty towards marriage. how beautiful can that be?
